Lord, it is easy to love the loveable but not everyone is loveable. In fact we are all unlovable at times. Help us to practice love the way you have taught us, putting one another above ourselves. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. (1 Corinthians 13:4)Love doesn’t come in chocolates, flowers, cards or even diamonds. It is far more precious that these things! Help us to be loveable and to truly, deeply love in for your name sake. “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:34)May we be known by Your love that flows through us. Amen

I tried moving on from the song still stuck in my head.

Instead, I find myself digging in deeper. It is a wonderful and marvelous thing to need the Lord each hour. Yes, each second too. Jesus set a perfect pattern for us on how and when to need/call upon the Father.

If Jesus called upon the Father in all these circumstances how much more do we need God’s presence in our lives? He is our ever present help, comforter, deliverer, fortress, defender, friend, teacher, encourager, protector, counselor, great physician and love.

“[Thanksgiving and Prayer] We ought always to thank God for you, brothers, and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love every one of you has for each other is increasing.” 2 Thessalonians 1:3

Prayer

Lord, may we continue to grow in faith. Thank you for encouraging us to come to you on all occasions. Surely you are worthy of our trust and adoration. Glory to God in the highest who is worthy to receive all honor and glory forever. Amen

Right now I cannot think of one circumstance or life situation where these words don’t ring true. I need Thee, oh, I need Thee; Every hour I need Thee.

Annie Hawks wrote:
“One day as a young wife and mother of 37 years of age, I was busy with my regular household tasks. Suddenly, I became so filled with the sense of nearness to the Master that, wondering how one could live without Him, either in joy or pain, these words, “I Need Thee Every Hour,” were ushered into my mind, the thought at once taking full possession of me.

I did not understand at first why this hymn had touched the great throbbing heart of humanity. I had no idea where this song originated until I began jotting down this devotional. What an incredible Godly lady! When she brought some songs to her pastor, Robert Lowery (also a songwriter) he recognized a talent in Annie and struck a bargain. Annie, “If you write the words, I’ll write the music.” Annie Sherwood Hawks is credited with writing 4oo hymns in her lifetime. Most songs were for Sunday school use. Her songs were published in Bright Jewels, Brightest and Best, Pure Gold, Royal Diadem, Temple Anthems, Tidal Wave, and other Sunday school song books.

In November 1872, the new hymn “I Need Thee Every Hour” was used at the National Baptist Sunday School Convention in Cincinnati, Ohio, where it was sung by 3000 people. Ira Sankey used it two years later in London leading to its regular use in large Moody evangelistic campaigns. This made it popular in the US as well as Great Britain, and it was translated into many languages and sang throughout the world. It was even featured in the Chicago World’s Fair.

Sixteen years after writing “I Need Thee Every Hour” Annie’s husband died, and she finally understood why the hymn had touched so many people. In her loss she found comfort in this hymn she had penned so many years earlier.

Prayer

Lord, thank you for the testimony of Annie Hawks. She is another wonderful example of how you can use us where we are to bring great honor and glory to yourself. Truly we need you every hour. Amen

How many seasons can you name? Spring, Summer, Winter, Fall, Autumn, Monsoon, Drought, Feast, Famine, and yes, Christmas.

Ecclesiastes 3

A Time for Everything

¹ There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under heaven:

² a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
³ a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,

⁹ But now that you know God—or rather are known by God—how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable principles? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again? ¹⁰ You are observing special days and months and seasons and years! ¹¹ I fear for you, that somehow I have wasted my efforts on you. Spring is a time of planting and renewing

Summer is a time of growth and toil

Fall is a time of harvest, gathering and preparation

Winter is a time of less light, cold, hardship, celebrations, and relying on what was prepare ahead of time

These aren’t just seasons of the year or weather but also seasons of growth. Regardless of what time of year it is, what season are you in? Age- are you in the summer or winter of your years? Mentally- are you soaking up the rays of knowledge or caught in a fog of depression? Spiritually-are you planting, enduring a dry spell, gathering abundance, or passing through a time of hardship? My Mother would call this a crazy question I am sure, but I think it bears asking. If you know what season you are in then you know better how to prepare. You wouldn’t plant seeds in winter or take a coat on a summer afternoon walk. What spiritual season are you in today?

Spring: is a time of planting and renewing – Are you enjoying the showers of grace, mercy and growth He is raining down on you during those spring showers? Are you busy preparing ground and planting seed?

Summer: is a time of growth and toil- It is hot and maybe a bit dry from the lack of rain? Are you working hard to pull stubborn weeds that choke out your spiritual growth?

Fall: is a time of harvest, gathering and preparation- Are you surrounded by His abundance? Are you storing away treasures of scripture and lessons learned that will sustain you during a long cold or dry spell?

Winter: is a time of hardship, less light, cold, celebrations, waiting, feasting on what was prepare ahead of time- The light isn’t as bright as in summer, things aren’t always easy and you need to apply every truth you have stored up over the years. Yet in this season even the smallest light burns bright and testifies to His greatness.

Just like in the seasons of weather, God is in control. He will bring about season changes in your life according to His plan and purpose. You can whine about it, feel lost in it or even fight against it but rest assured He knows what He is doing and desires the best for you. So maybe, if you know what season you are in you can be better prepared to allow Him to complete His work in you.

Spring- Be prepared to share what God is doing in your life. May be carry a small Bible or tracts for seed planting opportunities.

Summer- Don’t overdo it in the heat. Take time out to seek refreshing in Him. If it is dusty and dry, pray for rain. Just like in nature, you can wish for it and ask for it, but you can’t make it rain. God will send the rain in His time. Just be sure to have your field ready to receive it!

Fall- God’s abundance is ALWAYS around us. Store up treasures for yourself of what God is doing, showing you, delivering you from, leading you through, teaching you and providing.

Winter- Hang on because spring is coming! Be sure to look for lights that pierce the darkness and be sure to CELEBRATE His goodness.

Just like seasons of the year, each spiritual season has its good points and not so good points. A little understanding and preparation helps us to endure the unpleasant a bit easier. And no matter the season, we can always find something to enjoy about it. Remember a season does not last forever, it is temporary. Just like a tree grows a ring in seasons, we need different spiritual seasons to learn and grow in Christ.

Prayer

Lord, help us to recognize what season we are currently in and help us to understand what you are working in our lives. Forgive us for our tendency to whine and complain when things don’t go the way we want or think they should. Help us to trust you and lean not unto our own understanding. Help us to surrender to the work you are doing in us. Draw us closer and give us a fresh vision of you that we may know you better and love you more! Thank you for the variety in life, for always being with us, and for working together all things for the good of those who love you (Romans 8:28).

Romans 8:27-29

²⁷ And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will.

More Than Conquerors

²⁵And it came to pass, when Rachel had borne Joseph, that Jacob said to Laban, “Send me away, that I may go to my own place and to my country. ²⁶Give me my wives and my children for whom I have served you, and let me go; for you know my service which I have done for you.”

²⁷And Laban said to him, “Please stay, if I have found favor in your eyes, for I have learned by experience that the Lord has blessed me for your sake.” ²⁸Then he said, “Name me your wages, and I will give it.”

²⁹So Jacob said to him, “You know how I have served you and how your livestock has been with me. ³⁰For what you had before I came was little, and it has increased to a great amount; the Lord has blessed you since my coming. And now, when shall I also provide for my own house?”

³¹So he said, “What shall I give you?”
And Jacob said, “You shall not give me anything. Jacob is ready to move on and set up his own household and begin to build security for his family. Laban realizes how God has blessed Jacob and him because Jacob is living with him so he begs Jacob to stay, offering to pay him whatever Jacob asks. Jacob requests to be able to keep for himself all of the brown lambs and speckled, striped, and spotted goats. Laban isagreeable to Jacob stays but he implements an old wives tale in order to insure his success. Isn't it ironic Laban recognized how God was blessing Jacob but Jacob still relys on himself to insure his success. It is still true today. So many times others can see God's blessings in our lives before we recognize them ourselves. Until we recognize that we can do nothing on our own and praise God for everything we have we will continue to do things on our own missing the best God has for us and causing undo stress and anxiety in our lives. There is freedom in allowing God to be God in our lives. Trust Him today no matter your circumstances. His best for you is better than the best you can imagine!

Father, Provider how wonderful are Your ways and Your thoughts toward me! You pour out blessings continually on me. Open the eyes of my heart LORD and show me what I have missed by not allowing You to be God in every aspect of my life! Help me in my lack of trust! In Jesus name, amen.

Romans 8:37-39

New King James Version (NKJV)

³⁷Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. ³⁸For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, ³⁹nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

What has brought you to your faith? Do you consider yourself a Chrisitian because it is the faith of your ancestors or have you had a personal encounter with our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ? Even in the beginning heritage was not enough. Abram had a personal encounter with God. God made a covenant with Him and changed his name to Abraham. The covenant involved Abraham's descendants however every descendant that were involved in the fulfilling of the Abrahamic Covenant had a personal encounter with God. However in some cultures annd countries tradition and heritage are tied to identity, even woven into the countries laws.

I read this morning inVoice of the Martyrs Magazine of a man named Jon. Jon lives in one of these conuntries where it is against the law to vere away from the religion of their ancestors. Everyone in the country is required to be Muslim. Your religious status is listed on your ID card and it is against the law to convert to Christianity. Jon's ancestors were Muslim but he has had a personal encounter with Jesus Christ and has been changed. He is a Christian living in a country where it is illegal to be so. At one point Jon was taken to an Islamic Purification Center, put in a cell with three other Christian converts, and provided with "counseling services to help him with his faith restoration". The "counseling services" consisted of beatings, water boarding and other forms of torture. Jon became discourage as one by one his cell mates eventually gave in to the "counseling" but he remained faithful. It was only because of his personal encounter with Christ and his relationship that he had built with Christ before the "counseling sessions" began that Jon was able to remain faithful. Because of his faithfulness, God encouraged Jon by allowing him to hear the prayers of his Christian friends being offered up on his behalf while he was being "re-educated". Jon survived and is free for now. He is living proof that we are more than conquerors through Christ Jesus!

You are more than a conqueror through Jesus Christ too! As a Christian you have had a personal encounter with Jesus. He drew you to Himself and you responded. I pray that you have spent time with Him in prayer and in His word, building a deep and strong relationship! If you have, whatever your situation is right now, now matter how turbulent the storm is or will become, you can boldly claim Romans 8:37-39, "I am more than a conqueror through Christ Jesus my Lord ans Saviour and nothing can change that!" Shout it out against the waves if you need to, but don't waiver, follow your call, He will see you through!!

take God seriously.

What great advice!! Most of us go through life taking ourselves too seriously. We beat ourselves up for every mistake we make. God remembers we are dust. He just wants us to trust Him and live according to the instructions He has left for us. He wants us to treat each other like we want to be treated, to forgive each other the way we want Him to us and to love others like He loves us. So next time you make a mistake or have a task to do, do not become anxious, take it to the LORD in prayer. Trust Him, take Him seriously and allow Him to work through you, It is in our weakness that He is glorified and others are encouraged!

Father, Healer, my Rock and my Strength, You alone are perfect. I know I will make mistakes. Help me to trust You and laugh at myself. Genesis 37:5-10, 23-24

⁵Now Joseph had a dream, and he told it to his brothers; and they hated him even more. ⁶So he said to them, “Please hear this dream which I have dreamed: ⁷There we were, binding sheaves in the field. Then behold, my sheaf arose and also stood upright; and indeed your sheaves stood all around and bowed down to my sheaf.”

⁸And his brothers said to him, “Shall you indeed reign over us? Or shall you indeed have dominion over us?” So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words.

⁹Then he dreamed still another dream and told it to his brothers, and said, “Look, I have dreamed another dream. And this time, the sun, the moon, and the eleven stars bowed down to me.”

¹⁰So he told it to his father and his brothers; and his father rebuked him and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall your mother and I and your brothers indeed come to bow down to the earth before you?” ¹¹And his brothers envied him, but his father kept the matter in mind.

²³So it came to pass, when Joseph had come to his brothers, that they stripped Joseph of his tunic, the tunic of many colors that was on him. ²⁴Then they took him and cast him into a pit. And the pit was empty; there was no water in it.

So Joseph finds himself in a pit right after God had revealed that He was going to set Joseph apart and above is family. We have all been there, a mountaintop experience when we have felt so close to God and then we find ourselves in a pit! Sometimes we have dug the pit ourselves and sometimes others have dug it for us. Sometimes we are pushed into the pit and sometimes we blindly follow others into it, nevertheless we are there wondering if we misunderstood what God had shown us on the mountaintop. I am sure Joseph probably questioned his circumstances at times. He was human, but the Bible doesn't record it. Instead we see Joseph trusting God through it all. We all know the end of this story. God used the pit time to get Joseph to Egypt. Then He used more pit time, in a dungeon, to have Joseph appointed over all of the agriculture in the area so that through Joseph God could provide for His people all over that region during a severe drought and famine.

I hear you beloved follower of Christ. You think God has never spoken to you or given you a vision of greatness to hang on to. Maybe you think it might be easier if you had something to hang on to like Joesph. I have good news! He has spoken a word of promise to you, something you can hang on to during trials and tribulations. It is found in I Peter 2:9; '⁹But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; " He has chosen you. When you chose something it is because it is your favorite, you prefer it over all others! God has chosen you! You are His favorite! We are royal. We worth dignity and honor in His eyes! We are a priesthood. Priests were intercessors in Jesus' day. He has given us all the job of being intercessors for our fanily, friends and those around us! We are a specail people. We are so treasured by God that He purchased us! So you see my friend, you are set apart by God for a purpose!! Wherever you are today hang on to that truth!

Father there is none like You! You created everything visible and invisible and in all of your creation you call us your favorite! It is almost too much for our minds to grasp. Thank You for loving us so much, for setting us apart and giving us a purpose! Help us to remember that when we find ourselves in a pit and to trust You inspite of our circumstances just like Joseph did! In Jesus name, amen!

Why I went to Mayo Clinic in MN by Dr. Diane Dike

Paul and I asked ourselves that question several times before we left and in the 10 days we were there.

I went to the Mayo Clinic in MN because

1. My Neurologist told me he found indications of MS and optic neuropathy that can lead to blindness. He did his internship at Mayo and has been trying to get me to go for 2 years.

2. I get sick and tired of being sick and tired. So to be sure I'm NOT missing something to improve my health, treatment options or find a cure I keep trying.

3. Wanted to make some connections for our Cryoglobulinemia Vasculitis Organization (CVO).

4. I’ve been experiencing symptoms of Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia and Multiple Myeloma cancer.
5. AZ & FL These warmer clinic locations do not work with this disease for initial visits.

What was it like?

Amazing and awful!!!

Some doctors and staff were fantastic!! Some needed to take lessons from Gracie's vets on bedside manners.

The vasculitis/rheumatologly, opthamology & colonoscopy-endoscopy staff/departments were exceptional.

They were loving, encouraging and amazed at what we have overcome. They thought the therapy tub, the service dog (Gracie) and the wheelchair were creative ways to thwart dangerous flares. They encouraged me to keep it up and go for my dreams of helping children and learning to drive with hand controls.

However, some doctors acted ignorant saying, "What do you want me to do? You know more about this disease than any of us." When one saw my dreams for foster care he said, "Don't you think you ought to get yourself healthy before you start trying to help others?" To which I replied, "It's been 22 years. If I wait, I will not accomplish very much with my life! Helping others keeps me alive, full of hopes and dreams." He was rude and didn't understand, shrugging his shoulders. Another suggested I had enough problems? Since there is no cure for those two cancers what's the point? Finally, the very first doctor in charge of coordinating my case told Paul to be quiet. We were answering his questions and he said he couldn't listen to two people at one time. When a caretaker is in this with you they need to be heard. His words and actions were totally unacceptable to me. Another patient suffering from stroke like issues was told "maybe you just need to get off the couch." It is obvious that he doesn't belong in medical care.

They could get better and more organized.
Why did they wait until I got there to make a plan? I'd spent 3 months getting all records to them so they could get me into all the specialist during my stay. Instead, they waited until I arrived which gave me appointments until March 23. We couldn't stay that long and had to go to all the departments and sit and wait for hours/days to see if they might be able to fit me in. That resulted in exhaustion, being there from 7am-7pm, and NOT seeing the specialist who might have had some experience with this rare blood disease and getting proper follow up tests done, ugh! Consequently, the internist in charge of our case was unable fit me in the last day to do the final review. We'll have to wait for him to send his notes and reports in the next 6-8 weeks.

Finally, they put 4 IV's in and took them out after each procedure. Couldn't they have made a plan to get all the work done that needed IV's so I'd only get poked and bruised once? Not to mention the extra costs to us for unnecessary duplicating.

Conclusions

No answers were achieved in finding a cure, relief or help for the cryo or it's harsh symptoms. No connections to experts were made for CVO. The two forms of cancer were not completely ruled out.

GOOD NEWS:
*The optometrist did NOT find optic neuropathy!
*Blood tests indicate that my vital organs are holding up well!
*They burnt a pre-cancerous spot off my ear!

Basically, we are doing everything we can to manage this disease. At this time there is no help or new ideas to improve my situation. We will just have to stay creative and do the best that we can. It's not the life I dreamed of but it could be worse! I'm not about to let it keep me from fulfilling my God given destiny! God is sufficient and giving the strength for the battle.

I wouldn't change meeting all the incredible people, singing, hugging and praying... giving the books and babies away and connecting... At times, it seemed the waiting rooms were waiting rooms to Jesus with the stories of illness, pain, suffering and impending death but there I was in the mist of it with an opportunity to love, encourage, listen and sympathize. Keeps me holding on to scriptures like 2 Corth, 4:17, "For our light and momentary troubles are achieving an eternal glory that far outweighs them all."

Do I get down, discouraged and sometimes depressed? You betcha. I need verses like Proverbs 3:5-6, lean not on your own understanding... because I do not understand. But He says I can do all things through Him so I hold on to His word. It helps me persevere and keep the faith, hope and strength to be courageous no matter what!

I'm so thankful for Paul and Gracie and for you!! I'm ever grateful for your kindness! Thank you for caring, sharing and for your prayers! God Bless YOU!

Psalm 103:13-14

The Hebrew word for pities is racham and it means to love, to love deeply, have mercy, be compassionate, have tender affection, have compassion. God remembers He formed us from the dust of the earth. He knows our coming in and going out. According to Psalm 139 He has known everything about us from before we ever lived one day. He knows and has always known every mistake we would make, every sin we would commit and still He loves us deeply. He is tender affectionate toward us and has compassion on us! He loved us so much before we were born that He gave His only Son that whosoever, that means anyone, believes in Him should not perish but have ever lasting life! 

Part of the poem on the pedastal of the Statue of Liberty says, "Give me your tired, your poor, 
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,  
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. 
Send these, the homeless,  tempest-tost to me, "
The Herew word for dust is 'aphar and it means dust, earth, ashes, rubbish. God knows that we are the wretched refuse, homeless, tempest-tossed and poor. He knows our brokenness, our pain, our sorrows and our joys. He calls us to come to Him and cast all of our cares upon Him. Wherever you are today beloved run to Him. He is waiting with open arms to pour out His love, compassion and tender affection on you!

Father, thank You for giving my a home when I was homeless, for healing me when I was broken. Thank You for forgiving me when I sin, for making me rich in You. Thank You for finding me when I was lost, for calming me when I was anxious. Thank You for your courage when I am afraid. Help me to love You as You love me! I pray in Jesus name, amen.

Psalm 121

God the Help of Those Who Seek Him

A Song of Ascents.
¹ I will lift up my eyes to the hills—
From whence comes my help?
² My help comes from the LORD,
Who made heaven and earth.
³ He will not allow your foot to be moved;
He who keeps you will not slumber.
⁴ Behold, He who keeps Israel
Shall neither slumber nor sleep.

From this time forth, and even forevermore.
This is one of the many songs of ascents in the Psalms. These were songs sung by the Israelites as they made their journeys to Jerusalem to worship God in the Temple. They were required to travel to Jerusalem three times a year for the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the Feast of Weeks and the Feast of Tabernacles. These feasts were known as the Pilgrimage Feasts (Deuteronomy 16:16-17). The journey was long and dangerous for many of the people. They sang these songs to remind themselves of the greatness of God and to stay focused on the pilgrimage rather than the circumstances of the journey. These songs were also sung by the exiles as they returned from Babylonian captivity.

Psalm 121 speaks of God's faithfulness to protect them from the elements. He is there shade from the sun and their protection from becoming moonstruck (a very real fear in those days). They remind each other that God does not slumber or sleep. Night time was particularly hazardous for the travelers. Not only were theives on the road but there was also the threat of wild animals, so it was great comfort to know that God did not sleep but kept a constant vigil over His people. The road was steep, often the trail was narrow with ledges, so again there would have been great comfort in knowing that God would not allow their feet to slip.

God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. Do you feel like an exile? Has your journey been trecherous? Sing Psalm 121 today. Claim His awesome protection for you, your family and your situation. He does not slumber or sleep. You are his child! Call out to Abba, Father! He hears and will answer!

Abba, Father, Protector, Mighty God, be with me now! I am like a child frightened by a nightmare. My situation seems impossible and daunting! But this I know, You are God and what seems impossible with man is possible with You!! So I come into Your sanctuary, knowing You are awesome in this place! I cast all of my fears and cares on You Abba, Father and give You praise for what You are doing and for what You are going to do! Thank You Father for everything You have done! In Jesus name, amen.

I love how God uses every day things to teach us, correct us and convict us! I have a very dear friend who has become my accountability buddy and co-writer on a project. I love her dearly! We have a grand time laughing about various things. Recently she used this scripture for the portion of the material she was working on. After I read it I sent her this message "I wish I was lazy! Just think how thin I would be!" We both laughed about it, but God didn't laugh!

The next morning as I sat in my prayer room spending time with Him, He reminded me of my flippent comment from the night before. Then I heard Him say, "You are lazy. America is lazy!" Before I could question what He meant He brought to mind all of the "food" I had in my "bowl". He reimded me that I own no less than 10 Bibles and I have access to at least two at all times. I keep one in my car, one in my purse, one at work and I have my favorite study Bible that goeas with me everywhere. I have a Comparative Study Bible, a Hebrew/Greek/English Bible, an Appologetics Bible and a Daily Devotional Bible. God has also blessed me with several wonderful study tools; a Strong's Concordance, A Vine's Dictionary, an Illustrated Dictionary, five volumes of the History of the Jewish People, two books describing the Jewish feasts and the importance of them, a 54 volume New Testament Commentary just to name a few. What afeast He has provided for my soul!! Yet there are days I am a sluggard. My hand is in the bowl, so to speak, with all of this sorrounding me yet there are days I don't lift it out of the bowl. I become distracted with the busyness of the day and don't stop to spend time feasting on His word.

How about you? How many Bibles do you own? What has God provided for you to feast on? It has been estimated that there are four Bibles in every American household. That is not true in every country. Many don't have access to a Bible. Souls are starving all over the world and we have a feast before us that we take for granted! When was the last time you opened the Word and feasted until you were full to over flowing? Wouldn't it be wonderful if we all had "fat" spirits!

Father, Creator, Supplier of my every need! you have prepared a great feast for me in Your Word. Show me how to organize my time better so I will never again miss another "meal" with You!! Fill me up from Your Word until I run over so that I might share the blessings with others! Thank You for prepareing a table for me! In Jesus name, amen!

I attended my son's wedding this weekend. The young couple had asked the Pastor to bring a message sharing a clear plan of salvation before the vows. As the Pastor began his message he spoke of defining, life changing moments in each of our lives. Every defining moment begins with a choice. Marriage is a defining, life changing moment! He spoke directly to the young couple and indirectly to those in attendance reminding them that this choice was a lifetime decsion. Out of all of the millions of young people out there they had chosen each other, not for a moment, not for a season, not only in good times, not only for laughter, and not only for what they would receive out of the deal, but they had chosen each other for a lifetime, in good times and bad times, with laughter and with sorrow, and for what they could give to each other as well as what they could receive from each other. He reminded them and all of us that this was indeed a choice not a feeling. Then it dawned on me, the same is true of our salvation!

It may be a feeling that draws us to God or it may have been a crisis, but God used something to draw us to Him. He created us and has loved us from before the beginning. When we ask Him to be part of our lives He agrees to come, not for a moment or a season. He isn't ony there during the good times or to be a genie that gives us our every wish. God wants a relationship. Often in His word our relationship with our Saviour Jesus is described as a bride and bridegroom. God's love for us is eternal. He made that choice before He ever formed a thing (I Peter 1:20-21) even though He knew what it would cost. He is the commited bridegroom. Are we the committed bride? Do we really want Him to transform us into His likeness so we can be one with Him? That was His prayer for us that we would be one in Them. He asks us to leave the things of this world and to cleave to Him, not only when it is easy or fun but in every time and for all time. What has drawn you away from your "marriage vows" lately? Forsake them and return to your first love! it is worth it!!

Father I love You because You first loved me! You drew me to You and I accepted Your proposal to allow You to love me completely. I also agreed to love You completely in return, forsakeing the temptations of this world. Forgive me Father for looking to the right or left lately! I renew my vows to You and You alone today. I know I will be tempted and that I will stumble and fall along the way. I will need Your help; I can't do it without You! Thank You for beinging faithful even when I am not! In Jesus Faithful name, amen!

"Temporary"

Verses: Jonah 3:3 "So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD." (NKJV) It's amazing what happens when God works. Jonah finally gave up on running and submitted to God's command. He went to Nineveh and delivered the message from God. When he did, what happened next was both exciting and tragic. Jonah 3:5 tells us how the Ninevites reacted: "So the people of Nineveh believed God, proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them." (NKJV) When God's will is followed, look at what happens! The entire city is described as turning. So dramatic was the turn, that God didn't destroy the city. It's amazing what God can do through just one person when they submit to Him.

What I see as tragic is Jonah's response to the Ninevites not being destroyed. You'd think he'd rejoice that so many people got saved, but he acted in a way that should dismay you. Jonah 4:1 "But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he became angry." Angry over salvation?

It gets worse. God provided Jonah with a shade tree that grew up overnight. Then, in the heat of the morning, God killed the same tree. Jonah was very upset and threw a huge pity party of the death of a tree. Jonah 4:9-11 "Then God said to Jonah, '[Is it] right for you to be angry about the plant?' And he said, '[It is] right for me to be angry, even to death!' But the LORD said, 'You have had pity on the plant for which you have not labored, nor made it grow, which came up in a night and perished in a night. And should I not pity Nineveh, that great city, in which are more than one hundred and twenty thousand persons who cannot discern between their right hand and their left--and much livestock?"'

Ah, but he's not alone. I know I'm guilty of this. You see someone in church. You don't like the way they look, their lifestyle, their smell, or perhaps just the way they talk. Rather than walk up to them as God is telling you to do (the Great Commission doesn't play favorites), we would rather ignore them. I'm not saying you all do this, but I am guilty of it. What we are doing is saying, "I'd rather you never get saved and go to hell because I'm not interested in being friendly and showing you Jesus' love." That's what I am saying when I refuse to acknowledge a visitor's presence and make myself be friendly.

We'd rather not see our reputation perish by being seen with 'that kind' of person, then reach out and share God's love. How can we say that we walk with God when His very Word commands that we love? I John 2:9-10 "He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now. He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him." (NKJV)

Our reputation is like the gourd that God caused to spring up and then pass away. How important is popularity, really? Especially in comparison to those lost souls, heading on a fast track to hell without hope. God says, "How can you be so concerned about that which is fleeting when that which is eternal means so much more?" That's the whole point He's making with Jonah. The story makes me sad. First, Jonah runs away, then he's stuck in a fish's belly. Then, after seeing God work in a miraculous way, he's still mad because those "dirty, rotten sinners" got to see salvation.

Would that Jonah would have been like Jesus, willing to set foot in Samaria and share the Gospel with anyone who had ears to hear. Matthew 9:10 "And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples." I pray that we can be like that. Are hurting people willing to come to us for prayer? Or do they stay away because we don't associate with them? I'm not advocating we become best friends and agree with their lifestyle. Being a friend doesn't mean that. What I am saying is, take the time to love them. Loving them means taking the Gospel to them.

Prayer:

Lord, I pray that You would point out the hurting ones to us. Those who we would normally ignore. Open our eyes to see them and to hurt for them. To desire to see them come to know You. To set them free from the endless cycle of sin that only leads to death. Give us Your heart for the lost. Help us to not be like Jonah, but instead to be committed to Your Great Commission to seek out those in the hedges and ditches. To reach out to all who need Your love. Give us Your grace and remove our prejudices, Lord.

"Running Into Trouble"

Verses:

Jonah 1:1 "Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah." (NKJV)

Thoughts:

God has a will, a plan for each of us. He does speak, though not normally quite like He used to do (as in Jonah's case). But, when it came to Jonah, how did he respond? We find his response in vs 3. "But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD." (NKJV)

He did exactly the opposite of what He was supposed to do. He was told by God to go to Tarshish. He was supposed to bring God's word to an otherwise doomed people. Instead, he freaked out, said, "Um... no thanks" and took off in the other direction.

Don't be too quick to judge him though. Think about it. How often does God nudge you in a certain direction and you say, "Um... yeah thanks, but no". Understand friends, ignoring God's will is perilous. When God tells you to go somewhere, it's because He wants to use you to reach someone, to bless someone, or to teach you something important in your walk with Him.

Missionary Pastor Tim Hawkins once told the story of what happened to him. He was called by God to go to Peru. In his words, he said, "God had called. I KNEW where He wanted me to go, but I said 'Screw it, I want to go my own way and live for me, so I did. One night, I was riding my motorcycle, drunk and stoned and not interested in serving God at all. I was going about 70 mph when a truck hit me and threw me off my bike. I should have died. Instead, I woke up and could only see out of one eye. My arms wouldn't move." Turned out, he said, that he'd survived, but the doctors called it a miracle. He had lost one eye (he is known for his glass eye), had scars on the right side of his face, and had lost partial feeling in his arms, though he got that back eventually. Pastor Tim continued, "Don't run from God, He will get your attention one way or another. It's better to go through life's storms with God then to run off on your own, you never know what kind of fish is gonna swallow you." Pastor Tim has since been instrumental in opening orphanages in Peru as well as seeing many churches planted all over the country.

Jonah did the same thing, look what happened in vs 10,12,15,17 "Then the men were exceedingly afraid, and said to him, "'Why have you done this?' For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them. And he said to them, 'Pick me up and throw me into the sea; then the sea will become calm for you. For I know that this great tempest [is] because of me.' So they picked up Jonah and threw him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging. Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights."

Tomorrow, we will look at what happened next. But think about this. You may think you can run from God, but He has a way of getting your attention. Don't end up in a fish's belly. It stinks in there! What is God trying to get your attention for?

Prayer:

Lord, thank you for being so patient with us. I pray that You would show Your will to us all. Guide us, direct us, help us to listen to You and recognize Your voice when You are calling. Let us be like Samuel and respond to Your voice. Whether Your call be for big or small things, please let us discern it's You. You are our Father and our Shepherd. Lead us in Your perfect will and way. Amen.

"Man, It Stinks In Here"

Verses:

Jonah 2:1 "Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the fish's belly." (KJV)

Thoughts:

Following up on yesterday's, here we find Jonah in a most unpleasant situation. He ran from God, which was crazy since God is omnipotent (always here, wherever you are). God caused the seas to act crazy with a bad storm, and Jonah told the men to throw him overboard to make the storm stop. You realize, Jonah was NOT trying to get to Ninevah like God had commanded, he'd rather drown than follow God's will in his life! So, to stop Jonah's stubborness, God just had a fish swallow him.

Sometimes, when God prods us, we say no, so then, He has to get our attention by other means. Not because He has a sick sense of humor, but because He loves us. Sometimes, the fish of life swallows us, in a sense. We find ourselves in a really nasty spot. God put us there to teach us something. The problem is, it's dark in there, it stinks in there, we are destitute, left with nothing but to humble ourselves and talk to God.

Look at what Jonah says next. Jonah 2:7,9 "When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the LORD; And my prayer went [up] to You, Into Your holy temple. But I will sacrifice to You With the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay what I have vowed. Salvation [is] of the LORD." (NKJV)

Jonah was brought to the point of breaking. Like we've talked about all week, it's only in our desperation that we finally reach out to God. Look at the lost, even they cry out to God and either curse Him or come to Him. When we reach that point, we ALL turn to God.

As Christians, we have the same choice, do we turn to Him and beg for a return or do we sit in the belly of the fish and just wait to die? Will you remember the Lord and return to Him? Jonah was. He finally realized, "Why am I sitting here? This place is awful. God, I will do what You commanded in the first place." What will take for us to say like David, "Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me." Psalm 51:10 (NASB) Because, until we recognize the fact that: Against You, You only, I have sinned And done what is evil in Your sight, So that You are justified when You speak And blameless when You judge. Psalm 51:4 (NASB). Until we see that, we will be stuck.

Jonah 2:10 "So the LORD spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry [land]." (NKJV) God has a way of delivering us, if we will but turn to Him. Jonah's deliverance wasn't pretty, but isn't that true of us too? God made the fish throw Jonah up. Yuck. He's free, but he's all covered in vomit. When we sin against God, we can get covered in vomit too. God will release us, but then we need to ask for that clean heart, wash sin's vomit off and start following Him again.

Prayer:

Lord, we come to You today, asking You to show us sin in our lives that is keeping us from following You. Am I stuck in the fish's belly and not seeing it? Please reveal that to me. Show me Your will for my life, for without You, all ceases to hold meaning. Help me to find strength every day to keep doing what Your will commands, Lord. Give me grace to keep keeping on. Don't let me fall back into sin. It looks great, but I always end up with something I don't want. Thank You for loving me enought to throw me into a tailspin when I fall away. Keep me searching after Your heart alone Jesus,
Amen

"You Ask Amiss"

Mark 10:46-52

And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" So Jesus stood still and commanded him to be called. Then they called the blind man, saying to him, "Be of good cheer. Rise, He is calling you." And throwing aside his garment, he rose and came to Jesus. So Jesus answered and said to him, "What do you want Me to do for you?" The blind man said to Him, "Rabboni, that I may receive my sight." Then Jesus said to him, "Go your way; your faith has made you well." And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus on the road. (NKJV)

Thoughts:

I found this passage of the Bible really interesting to read. Why? Because here we find two different mindsets. The disciples were desperate for Jesus' approval. They wanted Him to do whatever they asked him to. So, they thought they'd be "Super Spiritual" and ask to sit on his left and right sides. After all, they were HIS disciples, so He liked them best, right? I love that Jesus said basically, "You don't know what you're asking, think it through." God's call was not an easy cushy road, but a hard, dark, scary path that would lead to death here on earth for many who chose to follow Him, only then to live a life everlasting with the Saviour.

It seems backwards to think that he who seeks to be first shall be last and he that serves all will ultimately be served. But, that's how it works. Think about it. Jesus came as a servant, and is now ascended on high, our Lord and coming King.

To drive home His point, Jesus then finds a beggar, seemingly moments after the whole, "who's cool enough to be with Jesus", argument. We find a beggar who has but one request. Not to be famous, not to be part of Jesus' entourage, but to receive his sight. I like to look at this as more than just going from blind to seeing. What about for the disciples? Did they realize that they were blind in their own right? Did they catch that they needed to be able to see? And when Bartimaeus could see, he followed the Lord. He could see clearly and knew what he was to do.

Michael Catt said, "Only desperate people get to the point where it's not about them but about the Lord". (From his excellent book, "The Power of Desperation" pg 182.) The disciple made it all about them. After all, hadn't Jesus said, "Seek and you will find."? (Matthew 7:7) But, He wasn't talking about earthly finding. He was talking about finding Him. Jeremiah 29:13 "And ye shall seek me, and find [me], when ye shall search for me with all your heart." (KJV)

Notice that the disciples said, "we want you to do for us". The beggar said, "have mercy on me". We need to approach God the same way. Last year, I did the same thing the disciples did. I basically told God, "I want You to give me this thing. You don't love me if I don't get it." Well, I lost it and guess what? I lost it because He loves me.

In losing what we so desperately cling to, we often find God. He has to bring us to our breaking point, our point of no return, our desperation, to show us that it's not about us, it's really all about Him. "Sometimes we can see more through our tears than through a telescope." (Michael Catt pg 170 ibid)

Let God bring you to the brink. Hey, even hang a foot off the edge if you have too. It's at that point, when all is seemingly lost, that we find God is right there. He's been there, waiting for you to stop your "it's all about me" fest and focus on Him. It's the new year, time to shift our focuses off ourselves, and say, "What would you have me do Lord?"

Prayer:

I have no prayer today except to pray for all of us. Prayer that you would find time alone to spend with our Lord and ask Him, "What do you want me to do Lord?" Then, let Him do what He will. After all, He promised in Psalms 37:4-5 "Delight yourself also in the LORD, And He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring [it] to pass." What are your desires? Are they God's desires? Let Him lead you.

Those verses just give me chills! How great is the one we call Lord? “The one who is, and was, and who is to come, the Almighty.” To quote the movie Facing the Giants, “What is too hard for the Lord? Nothing.” There is NOTHING too hard for our Lord. He was before the beginning of time and He will still be when this world has ended. NOTHING can destroy Him and NOTHING can remove us from His hand. He is all-powerful and He LOVES us. He is making us into a kingdom and priests.

How about you today? Are you feeling like a priest or royalty? I pray you are! After all, who are you going to trust; the lies of this world, your feelings or the Almighty? Dearly beloved, the Almighty not only loves you He desires a relationship with you. He will not leave or forsake you. He is polishing you to be His shining treasure. Even though you may still be a bit in the rough you are a diamond none-the-less. So let’s get out there and shine for Him today!

PRAYER

Lord, You are mighty to save! All glory and honor belong to you. Help us to live in the light of who you are and to trust what you are accomplishing in our lives. Thank you for loving us! Help us to greet others with the love that you have taught us and filled us with. In the precious name of Jesus, Amen.

Oh the feeling of getting all those things on your to-do list accomplished and checked off. And before lunch too! The rest of the day is before me and all the must do things are accomplished, what a victorious, freeing feeling. I am a little tired though, that took a bit of effort. It has me wondering. When Christ was there on the cross and declared “It is finished” what did that feel like? He had been beaten and physically depleted. But in that instant when he left that body behind and went to the Father with EVERYTHING completed…what that must have been like? It is Finished the Victory is Won!

The Death of Jesus

PRAYER
Thank you Lord that it is finished! The victory is won! We don’t need to do anything because You have completed it! We only need to accept what You have done for us and live. Live for You alone. As we stand with the tasks of daily life around us and troubles that pull at us, help us to stand in the victory You have accomplished. Thank you for the fresh breeze of freedom that you bring into our lives and the knowledge that you will never leave nor forsake us.

A well-known speaker started off his seminar holding up a $20.00 bill. In the room of 200, he asked, "Who would like this $20 bill?" Hands started going up. He said, "I am going to give this $20 to one of you but first, let me do this." He proceeded to crumple up ...the $20 dollar bill. He then asked, "Who still wants it...?" Still the hands .........were......... up in the air. "Well," he replied, "What if I do this?" And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up, now crumpled and dirty. "Now, who still wants it?" Still the hands went into the air. "My friends, we have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth $20. Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way. We feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value. Dirty or clean, crumpled or finely creased, you are still priceless to those who DO LOVE you. 1 Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.

The hustle and bustle of the holidays are over. The presents have been unwrapped the decorations have been taken down and put away until next year. Our lives have returned to "normal" with all of its challenges. If you don't mind my asking, how are you feeling? A little let down or insignificant? Maybe a little overwhelmed now that the bills for all of those gifts are coming due?! Perhaps your holiday wasn't exactly what you expected, perhaps you were far from family and friends physically or emotionally. Are you feeling a like you are a burden or unloved? It is a lie from the enemy! You are dearly loved and have been from before creation. I Peter 1:17-22 tells us that God loves us so much that before the foundation of the world He had a plan to redeem us and restore our relationship with Him! It is His lovingkindness that draws us to Him and His mercy and grace that redeems us!

No matter what the enemy tries to get you to believe emotionally you are loved by family, friends, and most of all by GOD!! He has not forgotten you. Did you see the sunrise this morning? He painted the sky just for you! Did you hear that bird singing? God told him to sing it right at that very moment just for you! When you are feeling a little overwhelmed, unloved or unlovable, stop, take a deep breath of air that God created for you, thank Him for all of His blessings in your life, then pick up the phone or send a card to the first person God brings to mind. Chances are they need to hear how much they are love too!

Our Father, how wonderful to be able to say that! We are all related who believe in You! You are our Father! Thank You for loving us with a deep everlasting love! Thank You for friends and family who encourage us, love us and remind us of how special we are. Thank You for my Second Chance with Saving Grace family! Thank You for the safety, grace, forgiveness and love that is there! In Jesus Holy and loving name, Amen!

The Parable of the Talents

Prayer
Father, thank you for a new year and a new beginning, for a chance to look back and see how you have blessed us over the past year. For a time to remember how you carried us through the tough times. Thank you that you have entrusted much to us! Help us to give you a good accounting of the "talents" you have given us in this new year. Help us to resolve to not wait for a new beginning to take care of business but to come to you as soon as we become aware of anything needing attention.
Thank you that we do not have to wait for a season but that your grace is sufficient, free, ready and available. Teach us to look to you each day, giving you our best. May we pray without ceasing with your love always upon our lips. May our walk with you become ever closer and ever sweeter.

Several years ago I made a resolution to not make anymore new year's resolutions. More than 75% of us don't keep our resolutions and end up clothed in guilt. Weather you keep a resolution this year or not remember Christ doesn't' want you weighed down by guilt. Isaiah 1:16-18

16 Wash and make yourselves clean.

Take your evil deeds out of my sight;

... stop doing wrong.

17 Learn to do right; seek justice.

Defend the oppressed.[a]

Take up the cause of the fatherless;

plead the case of the widow.

18 “Come now, let us settle the matter,”

says the LORD.

“Though your sins are like scarlet,

they shall be as white as snow;

though they are red as crimson,

they shall be like wool.

This time of year, when the world is white as snow (depending on where you live), those verses are tangible. Even the most unsightly landscape can become a thing of beauty after it is covered in snow. Fields that have been harvested and lay silent in their muddy repose are suddenly a blinding cape of shimmering diamonds as the winter sun dances across their newly received splendor. Decrepit, abandoned barns and farm houses take on a romantic glow of memories long passed under a table cover of white.

Now imagine yourself covered in that garment of holiness, shining so brightly in the gift of forgiveness that is yours by the crimson blood of Jesus Christ. We are robed in those snowy white garments. Perhaps not when we view ourselves or each other, but most certainly when we are viewed by God. He would not want us clothed in any other way. And Christ! Oh what he went through to purchase these robes for us! His blood is the only fiber these robes can be crafted from. His thorns have stitched them together. His love for us gifts each of us with the snowy white mantle to purify us in the sight of the Father.

The next time you are blinded by the snow, say “Thank You”. And remember that your holiness in the sight of God is just as beautiful.

Dearest Lord Jesus, thank you thank you thank you. Thank you for the purchase of the snow white sanctification we receive when we believe that you died for us. Thank you for the cross. Thank you for life in you, with you, beside you. Thank you God for loving us so much that you couldn’t stand to see us covered in the filth of sin. Forgive us for taking your love for granted every day. In Jesus name, Amen.

Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come:[a] The old has gone, the new is here! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation:

That first sentence caught me where it hurts… “So from now on we regard NO ONE from a worldly point of view” (emphasis mine).
I don’t know about you but I tend to look at other people and think, “At least I’m not like them”. This part of me is especially active at places like Wal-Mart. There lurks inside me a tiny middle-school aged girl with a boulder on her shoulder. Thoughts of, “I’m not THAT bad, just look at them…” run through her mind on a much too frequent basis. Is this how I’m supposed to look at the world around me? Do I know anything about them, their story?
I may not be as bad as them, because I know that I’m worse than they are by my attitude of judgment.

Praise God that I am made new in Christ Jesus. Praise God that each morning is a new opportunity to reach out and learn the story of those I would judge. Praise God that I can come before Him everyday and beg for Him to show me these lost lambs through His eyes!

Dear Lord, forgive me for looking at your world through my eyes. I implore You to change my eyesight so that I am able to see your world through YOUR eyes only. Amen

¹⁵ Then God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. ¹⁶ And I will bless her and also give you a son by her; then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall be from her.”
¹⁷ Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, “Shall a child be born to a man who is one hundred years old? And shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?” ¹⁸ And Abraham said to God, “Oh, that Ishmael might live before You!”
¹⁹ Then God said: “No, Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his descendants after him.

Abraham laughed at the impossibility of the promise God gave him of a son from his wife Sarah. This is the same man who trusted God when God told him to move to a place He would show him. By faith Abraham (Abram) gathered together all of his possessions and family and headed out for an unknown place confident that God would direct his steps. This latest promise seemed far too impossible so not only does Abraham laugh but he suggests another, more possible plan, "How about Ishmael?"

How about you? Has God revealed something He desires to do in your life or through you that seems utterly impossible? Have you laughed at the revelation and suggested other ways to accomplish the task? God is telling you the same thing He told Abraham, "No, your ways are not my ways, with Me all things are possible (Matthew 19:26)."

Father, God of the impossible, I look forward with great anticipation to this new year! It is full of new opportunities to see You at work in my life, new opportunities to join You in Your work! Father I desire to make a new covenant with You but I will need Your help to keep it! I desire to not rely on the ways of man any longer. I want to trust You, no matter how impossible the task may seem. I want to apply the truth of Matthew 19:26 to my life, what is impossible with man is possible with God! Help me to allow You to be glorified by trusting You to do the impossible! Thank You Jesus! In Your magnificent name, amen.

Esther 4:14-16

¹⁴ For if you remain completely silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” ¹⁵ Then Esther told them to reply to Mordecai: ¹⁶ “Go, gather all the Jews who are present in Shushan, and fast for me; neither eat nor drink for three days, night or day. My maids and I will fast likewise. And so I will go to the king, which is against the law; and if I perish, I perish!”

Esther had a choice. She could risk her life, go before the king and possibly save a nation or she could do nothing, hope no one would discover her true Jewish roots and possibly save herself. It couldn't have been an easy choice. We face choices everyday. Some require great bravery like Esther's choice. You may think you are not as brave as Queen Esther. Esther was not born brave, no one is, but she knew where her courage came from. She agreed to go before the king after she and all of the Jewish community spent three days fasting and praying for her. No matter what you are facing you can tap into that same courage. II Timothy 1:7 reminds us that we have not been given a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of sound mind. This year tap into that power. With God beside you there is nothing that can defeat you!

Father, You are my strength and my courage, my ever present help, my light in the darkness. Help me face my fears by giving them to You and trusting You. I know I can be the biggest obstacle to becoming all You created me to be so I give myself to You! Help me become all You created me to be and accomplish all You have appointed for me to accomplish this year. In Jesus Name, amen.

God made another covenant with Abram. He promised not only to give Abram descendants but He also set apart a certain section of land for them to inhabit. The covenant was sealed with a blood sacrifice which God passed through. God's revelation did not stop with the promise of the land. God revealed to Abram that his descendants would be captive in a land that did not belong to them and that after four hundred years they would be set free taking with them great possessions. This is a prophecy about Israel's bondage in Egypt, their escape from there and their time of wandering. God gives Abram a reason for this, "for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete."

Sometimes what we are going through in our lives is a direct result of something we have or have not done. Sometimes it is for others to see God glorified in our circumstances and still other times it is to allow others more opportunity to repent and turn to God, like the Amorites.

What ever you have been through this year be confident that God knew beforehand what was going to happen and how to help you through it! This year is no different. God knows the plans He has for you. Jeremiah 29:11 is a favorite verse of many and one many people can quote. It is the verse many hang on to during difficult times. Before making any resolutions, seek God first. Ask Him what His plans for you are. Then be still and wiat for His response. He is faithful and He will reveal to you the answer. When He does reveal his plans for you respond immediately with readiness. Walking with your hand in His you will have a year filled with His peace!

Father You are LORD of all creation. You have formed every star and keep them in their place. Every grain of sand You made. You know the exact time every flower will sprin up and bloom. You also know the plans You have for me. Help me to turn over control of my life, every part of it, completely to You. Help to keep my hand in Yours and walk where You lead. I don't not want to run ahead or shuffle unwillingy behind. You have not given me a spirit of fear and defeat. You have given me Your Spirit to dwell in me and give me strength. Thank You LORD! In Jesus mighty Name, amen!

What an exciting time of year this is! We have just celebrated the birth of a New Baby, Jesus, who brought the promise of new life in Him. We have new toys, new tools, new appliances, and new clothes. We are looking at putting behind us an old year with all of its triumphs and tragedies and looking forward to a new year full of promise. Because of the hope we feel we are once again ready to make new resolutions on being healthier, kinder, losing weight and a number of other things. Instead of making a new resolution and depending on ourselves why not renew your covenenat with God and ask Him to help you keept. Seek Him first, He is faithful! He keeps His covenant with you and will help you to keep yours with Him!

Prayer Father, thank You for Your faithfulness! Today I give all of myself to You! I ask for your help as I come to You just as I am, broken, dirty in need of You and Your cleansing! Make me a new creation today! in Jesus name, amen.

Glory in the Highest

⁸ Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. ⁹ And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. ¹⁰ Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. ¹¹ For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. ¹² And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.”
¹³ And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:
¹⁴“ Glory to God in the highest,
And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”

Anyone that has ever gone into a stable, unless it was a show barn, noticed several things. First, probably before even entering, would be the stench of animal waste and maybe the smell of fresh hay. Second would have been the filth of the stable, dirt floor. animal waste, leftover feed and possible puddles of water. This is our Savior's first bedroom and this is how our sinful lives appear to God, filthy and bad smelling. Jesus was not afraid to come into that atmosphere then and He isn't now. He waits for us to invite Him into the filth of our lives and allow Him to make it beautiful, clean and new.

The first announcement of the Saviour's birth is to the shepherds abiding in the field. They were probably the poorest of the comunity but they also seem to be the only ones watching and quiet enough to hear. Wise men in another country were also watching and did not miss the Star in the sky and began their journey. God came for all; the poor, the rich, those near, those far and especially for those who lives are not clean and perfect! As we look forward to a New Year, new beginnings and new commitments, why not renew your commitment to Him!

Prayer Father, Saviour, thank You for coming into less than perfect conditions as a reminder that there is nothing to dirty for You to clean up in our lives! There is room in my life for You! Come clean out the dirt and make me new today! In Jesus Cleansing Name I pray, Amen!

Luke 2:27-33

Simeon had waited his entire life for God's promised Messiah to come to earth. The Bible records that Simeon was very devout and the Holy Spirit was upon Him. God had promised that Simeon would not see death until he saw Jesus. Many in this world are waiting for something in their lives. Some are waiting for jobs, some are looking for basic needs, some for children or grandchildren in their homes, and some are looking for love. I can't promise the answers you are seeking to things like jobs, finances, basic needs, children or grandchildren, but I can promise you can find the love and peace you are loking for! The birthday we celebrated yesterday is conformation of that promise! God sent His only begotten Son because of His great love for us! That baby born more than two thousand years ago changed everything! We have been offered adoption into God's eternal family. We can now approach the throne of grace with boldness and confidence. We can receive forgiveness for our sins and we can receive His Spirit and strength to help us to become all God created us to be!

Thank You Father for the greatest gift I have ever received, the gift of salvation through Your Son Jesus! The gift of Jesus was and still is free for all who choose to receive and unwrap it! Thank You Jesus for leaving all of the riches of heaven and coming to earth, taking on the confines of human flesh and pouring out the love of the Father on the world! Father I pray that I will continue to share the gift of Your love all year long by sharing the changes a Baby, Jesus has made in my life! In Jesus loving, feeing name I pray, amen!

The Real Christmas Story

Seeing as today is Christmas Eve Eve I thought it fitting to just share the first Christmas story with you. Why not? It should be read every year!

Luke 2:1-21 (NKJV) And it came to pass in those days [that] a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria. So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city. Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, [fn] who was with child. So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Go Tell It!

Luke 2:17-18 (NKJV) "Now when they had seen [Him], they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child. And all those who heard [it] marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds."

Matthew 11:4-6 (NKJV) "Jesus answered and said to them, "Go and tell John the things which you hear and see: [The] blind see and [the] lame walk; [the] lepers are cleansed and [the] deaf hear; [the] dead are raised up and [the] poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me."

Most of us are familiar with the great Commission that Jesus commanded in Matthew 28:19-20 (NASB) "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

What I'd never stopped to think about was what the Good News really is. I know we speak of salvation, we speak of Heaven and Hell. But, it all began because a little baby was born. Isn't that something? When He was born, the shepherds spoke of His birth. When Jesus was older, people spoke of His miracles. Now, we speak of His redeeming grace. Go tell it!

Why don't we share it? Why are we so afraid? After all, He saved us and not sharing it with others is the most selfish act we can commit. We are withholding the only way that a man can escape hell and an eternity separated from God. John 14:6 (NASB) "Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me." Go tell it!

He was born in a lowly manger, now He is in Heaven. Waiting with our mansions, eternal life, and happiness. Why would we not tell others of this wonderful gift? This opportunity to escape sin's penalty and live free? Something to think about> Share the Christmas story and our Saviour's birth with someone who's never heard. The best Christmas gift you could ever receive/give to someone.

Prayer: Our Father, we come to You this morning, asking You to bring someone our way who is desperately seeking for You. You promise that if any man seeks, he will find You. Lead those people to us so we can open Your word and speak the words of life. Lead us to the hurting souls who need You. Open our eyes to the needs of those around us. Help us to see the lost and have our hearts broken for them. Don't let us be afraid, but rather rejoice over what you are doing in our lives, Lord, by bringing a lost soul in. Help us to blow down the resistance and share Your glorious Good News with the world. Strengthen SCwSG so that we may share You with the entire world. We know You can do it, but we can't. Lift us up to be all we can't be.

Bringing Our Gifts

Matthew 2: 1-2, 7-11 (NKJV) "Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, 'Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.' Then Herod, when he had secretly called the wise men, determined from them what time the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, 'Go and search carefully for the young Child, and when you have found [Him], bring back word to me, that I may come and worship Him also.' When they heard the king, they departed; and behold, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came and stood over where the young Child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh."

As I was reading this, it struck me how symbolic the three gifts were. I don't want to focus on Herod or debate how many wise men there were. (More than three! )

Think about the gifts given. He was a baby when the wise men got to Him, but they gave Him gold, frankincense and myrrh. Why are those symbolic? Well, think of this:

Gold is the most valuable of all the metals. often used when making a crown. Jesus was the long promised king. So, the gift acknowledged that.

Frankincense represents Jesus' purity. Leviticus 5:11 (NKJV) says this at the latter part of the verse: "Nor shall he put frankincense on it, for it [is] a sin offering." So, Frankincense is for only the very pure. Frankincense couldn't touch anything sinful, this represents our holy Saviour.

Myrrh was a seemingly odd choice. Myrrh was used to anoint dead bodies. This represents why He came to earth. It was to die for our sins and shed his blood for us. Without which, we have no remission of sin. In John 19:39 (NKJV), we see the use of myrrh: "And Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds."

All of that brought me to this. What kind of gifts to you bring to Jesus? What will we lay at His feet one day? A gift for Jesus should be one that is done because He is our Saviour, because He is our King and because He deserves to be worshiped by us. "And what are our gifts?" you ask. Well, that's anything you do to honor Him. Our good works. Ah, but remember. Don't do these so you can brag to others. God is not mocked. I Corinthians 3:12-13 (KJV) Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is."

It will be revealed. Did you do the work to worship and honor our King and Saviour or did you do it so others could see? It will be revealed. I don't know about you, but I know I want to be able to bring gold, frankincense, and myrrh to lay at Jesus' feet when we get to see Him.

Prayer:

Lord, I ask You to show us where we are serving ourselves and not You. Show us where we need to humble ourselves and turn to You. Let us not be doing what we do because of how many people will see it and lose sight of you. Thank You for being victorious over the grave! Thank You for saving our wretched souls! Thank You for being our returning King! We long to see Your face, Lord.

Coming Home

Luke 15:18-20 "'I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.' And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. (NKJV) (Whole story in verses 11-32.)

You may wonder what the prodigal son has to do with Christmas. I did too, while I was reading this. Think about it. Have you lost your relationship with your Father? I don't just mean your earthly father or family, though if you have division in your life, now is a great time to make it right!

I'm talking about a relationship with your Heavenly Father. Maybe you don't have one in which case you need to start. Are you fed up with the emptiness that the world offers you every year? Does it feel unsatisfying after the wrapping has been torn off the gifts and all you're left with are bills? What better time than at Christmas to fill that lonely spot? Think of the innocent babe who grew up to be an innocent man and then bore your sins, my sins, to Calvary's tree so we could have a home in heaven. Why not receive the greatest gift this holiday season? One whose debt was paid long ago.

And you, my fellow believer, who haven't darkened a church's door in years or who raises their hands in empty worship every year, what about you? Have you gotten your fill of the world's food and are still hungry? Do you remember what it was like at your Father's table? It's time to come home for Christmas. Notice how the son's Father approaches his son's return. He RUNS to him. He doesn't walk or send a servant or shoo him away. He drops everything and sweeps him up and throws a party. Let God throw you a party! Turn from the foulness of this world. God is waiting.

Don't let your return be "only in your dreams". Let it be real, let it be this week! Turn around, He's right there, arms held open wide.

Prayer:

Lord, I pray today for those of us that are dreading Christmas. Dreading the broken relationships they have. Dreading the emptiness that comes year after year. May those who are searching find their answer in You. Those who are hurting find their healing in You. Those who have wandered, find their return in You. Let this be a Christmas of new beginnings. Thank you for being our gracious and loving Father.

The Forgotten Birthday

Matthew 1:18- 21 (NKJV) Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph her husband, being a just [man], and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. "And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins."

The thought struck me on Sunday about where our priorities lay on Christmas. I was out buying my Christmas presents (I know, I'm a slacker!) and all around me, others were doing the same. However, in all the stores, I heard Jingle Bells, some rock n roll version of White Christmas, and an awful song about Christmastime in Africa. Not one of these songs mentioned Jesus' birth.

Picture this: It's your birthday. You're super excited. You wake up ready for a party and some gifts, maybe a little cake. As the day wears on, you see lots of people running around planning things and then, they suddenly start saying some fat man in a red suit is responsible for these gifts, and... they aren't giving anything to you! "But, it's MY birthday!" you cry. "It's not fair!" No, it's not fair to be completely ignored on your birthday while the people celebrate over a man who's not even real. Why, they don't even say it's your birthday because some people find your name rather offensive, so they change it to say something stupid. Rather than Happy Birthday, they are saying it's merely a Good Day. You're hurt and rather let down.

Why should it be any different to Jesus? We have completely forgotten why we celebrate Christmas. The closest to a Christian Christmas movie is Charlie Brown. Otherwise, it's Rudolph and Santa, and warm feeling Tim Allen movies. What happened to the little baby born in the manger to save us all from sin's power? The one foretold in Isaiah 9:6 (KJV) "For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."

He's our Redeemer and we have completely ignored Him. What are we doing? This Christmas, yes be with your family, go see a movie, enjoy the time. But first, why not think abiout WHO we are celebrating? Why not consider the One who came in a lowly stable so we can enjoy the blessing of following Him who loved us first? All He asks is that we acknowledge Him. Is that so hard to do? Seek Jesus first this Christmas.

Prayer: Lord, we come to You in a spirit of love. Thanking You for coming in the form of a man. You didn't mind becoming a servant for us. You willing gave up a mansion for poverty. You gave up everything for us. Thank You. Help us to be more mindful of that this Christmas and every day of the year. It's not Santa who's knows if we've been bad or good, it's You, Lord. Help us to focus on You. Thank You for Your bountiful blessings in our lives. Thank You for loving us so. Let us shine Your light in this Christmas season, remembering You are the real reason for this season. In Jesus' holy name,

I just love this time of year. There are twinkly lights and bright stars everywhere. They add so much beauty to what would really be a dark time of year. There is a restaurant I like to go to that has an old oak tree out front. The owners have put tables around under the tree. During the day it is a great place to sit and have lunch. But when dark comes and the white twinkly lights are turned on, that tree goes from just being a place out of the sun to magically romantic.

I don’t imagine that the wisemen saw the star of Christ as magically romantic. It was something deeper than that. It was the excitement of the fulfillment of a promise long ago, for a promised king, a deliverer. This was the arrival of someone worthy of a long dusty travel and extravagant gifts; gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Yes, to see the beauty of the Christmas stars and know the story behind them is moving. But to personally know the savior that these lights represent is … ever growing. The more I learn about Him, the more I find there is to learn. I thought I knew how much he loved me; he stretched out his arms and died for me. But I learned that he loves me even more. I thought I knew that he would forgive me. But I am still learning how far the east is from the west. I thought I knew his grace was sufficient. Yet, I sometimes find myself holding on to things wondering how he could love me after this. How does his grace cover all the times we are in an impossible situation and doubt that he will come through? Yes, the more I know about him, the more there is to learn. With each discovery, I think those Christmas lights get just a bit brighter and twinkle-er.

Today’s Prayer

Lord, I thank you for this special time of the year we set aside to remember the birth of our savior. I know there are winter celebrations that have nothing to do with you. There is always an emptiness to them. They are nothing to compare with the celebration of you. Help us to refrain from the commercial race of emptying our bank accounts in the attempt to celebrate your birth. With you there is a filling. You fill us with love, joy, hope, celebration, life and peace. Help us to give wisely in accordance with your will. Please give us creative ways and opportunities to share with others. Help us to share the love, joy, hope, celebration, life and peace you give with them. After all, the best gift that ever was or ever could be has already been given. There is no topping you!

The Crucifixion

²⁶ As they led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus. ²⁷ A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him. ²⁸ Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children. ²⁹ For the time will come when you will say, ‘Blessed are the barren women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’ ³⁰ Then “‘they will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” and to the hills, “Cover us!”’

³⁹ One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Christ? Save yourself and us!”

⁴⁰ But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? ⁴¹ We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”

⁴² Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”

⁴³ Jesus answered him, “I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.”

Behold Your Mother

The Death of Jesus

⁴⁵ From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land. ⁴⁶ About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi lama sabachthani?”—which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

⁴⁷ When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.”

⁴⁸ Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a stick, and offered it to Jesus to drink. ⁴⁹ The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”

⁵⁰ And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.

Sometimes we find ourselves in a situation that is out of control, unbearable, painful. Sometimes we feel beat down and ready to give up. We have been hanging on to the last knot in our rope and Friday just won’t get here soon enough. What do we do? How do we go on?

We follow the example of Jesus. The pain he endured on the cross was unbearable but he knew the Father had a purpose in it. Jesus endured the pain while still thinking of his mother’s needs and making arrangements for her future needs. He had physically been beaten to beyond recognition yet he didn’t hold malice toward the ones who attacked him. Better yet, he asked for forgiveness for the ones that had abused him. While hanging on to humanity and the life left in his body he never called upon the armies of angles at his disposal to rescue him. He lived out that situation knowing that was what he was born for and, that there was a great purpose in it.

Whatever you are going through God is there with you in the midst of it. As out of control as it seems, he knows about it and he is in control of it. He will use it to refine you and bring you closer to him, if you allow him to. Remember that you aren’t the only one hurting. Reach out to others and help them however you can. Forgive the ones that have hurt you and are currently hurting you. Hang on until God tells you otherwise. We don’t always know why he created us, the task he has for us, or the prosperity he has for us around the next corner. We do know he loves us and we can trust him. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:10-12)

Today’s Prayer

Father, here we are at the holiday season. Everything is decked out for Christmas and everywhere we look hearts and faces are aglow. As wonderful as this time of the year is it can leave us feeling lonely and filled with pain. Lord I pray for those of us who need your loving touch, a fresh filling of your joy, that we would experience your presence anew. Lord, take these things that grab us, hold us or bind us and put them in perspective so that we may leave them at your feet. Holy is you name! You are worthy to receive all glory, power and honor! Thank you for all you have done on our behalf and all you are still doing. Merry Christmas! We love you too! Amen

Mary’s Song

Mary had such insight in to who God was and how He was blessing her but, she didn’t understand everything. I wonder about some of the insights she had. What were they? How much did she truly understand? What would it be like to raise the son of God?

In the same way, we knew who Christ was when we accepted him as our personal savior. We understood a desperate need for him and the forgiveness he held for us. We knew he loved us and gave his very life for our redemption. Whatever insights we had, Christ far exceeds our expectations. We gain a whole new understanding of forgiveness, love, sinfulness, grace, and mercy after we become his. The Christmas story takes on a new luster. It is a chapter in the greatest story ever told. I hope that this year you are able to embrace the full passion of Christmas and all that is means.

¹⁵ When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

¹⁶ So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. ¹⁷ When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, ¹⁸ and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. ¹⁹ But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. ²⁰ The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

Someone e-mailed me a song “If You Don’t See Merry Christmas In the Window” and it stuck in my head late last night. God began to use it asking, what is in your window? This wasn’t about the windows of my house. But rather, how transparent am I? Do people see my love for Christ? Sure, I can sit down and type out what is in my heart. But, do people see it when they encounter me in person? Do I have “Merry Christmas” displayed in my window all year long?

The Shepherds were excited and amazed to hear of the birth of our savior. They went into town and told others what had happened and what they had learned about this special child. There must have been something in their voice, a certainty in their tone. Because, not only did those who heard believe, they were amazed at what the shepherds told them.

Mary treasured up these things and pondered them in her heart. Have we treasured up what Christ has done in our lives? Are we excited about the night he came into our life? Does it show all over us when we say Merry Christmas? Is it there in our voice for others to hear?

What is in your window? Does it cheerfully declare Merry Christmas? Is it overly busy and tacky? Are there decorations that just don’t belong? Maybe it is time to get out the Windex and a duster to clean that window up. Let’s get ready, Christmas season is here!

December can bring a lot of stress with the shopping and decorating. It is a great chance to practice our focus on Christ. He is the smile and joy when we greet someone with Merry Christmas. He is the light of the world and more beautiful than all the Christmas lights put together. He is sweeter than the aroma of vanilla and cinnamon drifting in from the kitchen.

He is everywhere we look. Not just in the manger scenes that pop up all over the place. All around us we see green, red and white. Red represents the blood He shed for us. White speaks of how He washes us as clean as fresh snow. Green tells of how we will live with Him forever.

Each gift reminds us that Christ was the perfect gift. I wonder if the tradition of wrapping is because Christ is God wrapped in flesh? Each cantata and carol a praise to Him. Glory to God in the highest, peace and good tidings on Earth.

I stopped to look at Mary's video update as she goes through her battle with cancer and it just struck me how we had the same thought of being in the arms of Jesus. One of my favorite things about the Christmas season is sitting in front of the lit Christmas tree with a steamy cup of tea or hot chocolate. Those lights draw me in and the next thing I know I am a million miles away in thought. The hustle and bustle of the season just falls away and I am able to focus on whatever God has for me that day.

Today as I sat in front of the Christmas tree it wasn't the lights that grabbed my attention but the ornaments. We don't have matching ornaments but more of a mish mosh of collected treasures. Each ornament has its own story; a memory of family, friends and Christmases past. I recalled when my children were younger and they would climb into my lap to hear the story of each ornament they picked out.

Then I envisioned crawling into the lap of the one that loves us best. I could hear him as he began to hold up a treasure he had created in me. He lovingly displayed it while reminding me of how he loved me and sculpted this treasure in me. That he was there with me in that situation. Always present, always loving, always giving, and always guiding. There were enough treasures to fill a whole tree! Some were storms he had brought me through. Other treasures were unexpected beauty and joy he had brought into my life; the birth of children, sunrises and sunsets, double rainbows and butterflies. Some treasures were the people God has introduced into my life; a Godly mother, a special best-friend, one particular little old lady that taught me that work is the most precious word in the English language. I could spend the rest of the day thinking of the people God has used to bless me, grow me and challenge me to new heights. Alas, the phone rang and life was calling. I long to crawl back into the lap of God, to be near him and hear what else he has to say. I pray you make the opportunity to spend time in his lap soon.

Father, thank you for being our ever present help. Thank you for the special times when we can fall into your arms. In your arms we find love, comfort, adoration, compassion, strength, protection and encouragement. Amen

Everything New

1I saw Heaven and earth new-created. Gone the first Heaven, gone the first earth, gone the sea. 2I saw Holy Jerusalem, new-created, descending resplendent out of Heaven, as ready for God as a bride for her husband. 3-5I heard a voice thunder from the Throne: "Look! Look! God has moved into the neighborhood, making his home with men and women! They're his people, he's their God. He'll wipe every tear from their eyes. The City of Light

9-12One of the Seven Angels who had carried the bowls filled with the seven final disasters spoke to me: "Come here. I'll show you the Bride, the Wife of the Lamb." He took me away in the Spirit to an enormous, high mountain and showed me Holy Jerusalem descending out of Heaven from God, resplendent in the bright glory of God.

12-14The City shimmered like a precious gem, light-filled, pulsing light. She had a wall majestic and high with twelve gates. At each gate stood an Angel, and on the gates were inscribed the names of the Twelve Tribes of the sons of Israel: three gates on the east, three gates on the north, three gates on the south, three gates on the west. The wall was set on twelve foundations, the names of the Twelve Apostles of the Lamb inscribed on them.

15-21The Angel speaking with me had a gold measuring stick to measure the City, its gates, and its wall. The City was laid out in a perfect square. He measured the City with the measuring stick: twelve thousand stadia, its length, width, and height all equal. Using the standard measure, the Angel measured the thickness of its wall: 144 cubits. The wall was jasper, the color of Glory, and the City was pure gold, translucent as glass. The foundations of the City walls were garnished with every precious gem imaginable: the first foundation jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, the fifth onyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth amethyst. The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate a single pearl.

21-27The main street of the City was pure gold, translucent as glass. But there was no sign of a Temple, for the Lord God—the Sovereign-Strong—and the Lamb are the Temple. The City doesn't need sun or moon for light. God's Glory is its light, the Lamb its lamp! The nations will walk in its light and earth's kings bring in their splendor. Its gates will never be shut by day, and there won't be any night. They'll bring the glory and honor of the nations into the City. Nothing dirty or defiled will get into the City, and no one who defiles or deceives. Only those whose names are written in the Lamb's Book of Life will get in.

The Christmas season is here once again. This season that so full of promise and hope, for many people, is a season of pain and grief.

Christmas memories can drench our minds with the whiff of a familiar scent such as pine trees or baking cookies. A song can bring the faces and surroundings of long ago celebrations into perfect view. These memories may be sweet recollections of family and traditions, but all too often they bring longing and sorrow - unwelcomed holiday guests of the heart. Or both.

This “Most Wonderful Time of the Year” can be especially difficult after the loss of close loved one. Whether from death or estrangement doesn’t matter, the heart doesn’t recognize the difference. The absence is there, demanding our attention. In a room fully decorated with lighted trees, brightly wrapped gifts, and mistletoe what is missing can often take center stage.

This is the third Christmas without Larry. This year I have made some changes. Instead of the 9’ tree that we’ve always had, the one that always sits in the corner (the same corner where Larry entered the glory of heaven), this year we have two smaller trees. My tree is white with blue. Not a traditional tree, but it comforts me. White for the purity of Jesus and blue for the peace that passes all understanding. Noah’s tree is red and white, spiral branches of red and white that closely resembles a big fuzzy candy cane. As Noah and I were decorating his tree last night he said, “This is our new tradition mom”. Perfect!

Change is ok. We don’t have to continue with holiday traditions that bring heartache. Change things up a bit. Have a different meal, find some new songs, look for Christmas in new places.

When Christ returns everything will change. No more tears, no more death, everything will be new. For our loved ones that have already gone home it’s already new. Imagine what wondrous Christmas celebrations take place in heaven….. every day!

This song is the most comforting song for anyone who has lost loved ones to death. The artist is Sarah Scheiber, a personal friend who is one of the members of our “club” W2Y – Widows Too Young. It’s through Sarah that I know Marni and Mary, the little one we’ve been praying for. I pray that you find solace in the music this season.

Dearest Lord, this season of celebration brings with it the loss of those we love that are now home with you. You know the pain of this loss God. When your son died the whole earth shook. Our hearts tremble each day with the longing of days past. My prayer is that we are able to find comfort and peace knowing that we are not isolated from those who are present with you. Separate but still connected. Grant us patience for the journey Lord, especially during times of celebration. In Jesus’ sweet name, Amen.

How many seasons can you name? Spring, Summer, Winter, Fall, Autumn, Monsoon, Drought, Feast, Famine, and yes, Christmas.
